Welcome to the 5th edition of The Pulse -- The State of the Art -- a survey in words and pictures of the online artist community. The Pulse is a collaborative project that aims to introduce you to new artists, help you get to know familiar faces even more, and allow you access into the creative hearts and minds of a very talented crew of individuals. More than 130 artists have answered a series of questions which make up The Pulse. Their responses will be presented in a series of online posts.
To start things off with a bang, postings from The Pulse started yesterday and are continuing today and tomorrow. Regular weekly postings begin on Sunday July 10th and will continue every Sunday thereafter.
GIVEAWAY
To celebrate the start of the 5th edition, every person who leaves a comment on any of the first three postings will be eligible to win a copy of 'The Pulse - The Zine' from 2008, which is now out of print and unavailable. Comments close on Saturday July 9th and the winner will be announced on Sunday July 10th.
Style File is the 1st of 6 projects from The Pulse. Participants were asked: How would you describe your artistic style?

Roxanne Evans Stout
I am a collage artist who loves biological illustration, landscapes and making or altering books. I also work on canvas and wood. I love to make things look old. My style involves layers of textured paints, scraping and tearing, and changing and adding to surfaces. I find all these processes so freeing after drawing and painting representationally for so many years. I guess I like to work with the abstract, classical and impressionist at different times depending upon my mood. Nature has a huge influence on all my art.

Wen Redmond
When I work, I encourage a collaborative process with spirit, or my higher self, that mind-boggling principle of the universe. This process can also be called 'flow'. When you are in this state of mind, the intuitive is tapped and the work can become more than the sum of its parts. I work out insights, inspirations, feelings, and reactions to the outer world. Allowing time for these inspirations to percolate up from my unconscious is a vital part of my process.Work that happens without a forced hand seems to be the best. The unconscious becomes conscience.

Chris Miser
Color and shape. I prefer the abstract, and an immediate impact, rather than a highly detailed, representational image which echoes the real. I rarely make representational art, and if I do, if is often pared to its essence.
-----------------------------------------
Nelda Ream
As an emerging artist, I feel that my style is still experimental. In this painting, Outside My Window, I was experimenting with contrast; contrast of color, pattern and texture.

Kelly Kilmer
Personal. Vulnerable. Honest. Emotional. Heartfelt. Real. A quiet explosion of raw feeling and passion poured out onto the pages of a book.

theresa mARTin
My style is eclectic and layered. Arsenic and Old Lace.
-----------------------------------------
Debrina - Debbie Price-Ewen
I love to blend and bleed my colours all at once, usually with quite a bit of layering and attention to detail. The result is a bit of a paradox: spontaneous and experimental but also controlled and precise.
-----------------------------------------
Deryn Mentock
Eclectic elegance: found objects, well worn and loved...sprinkled with gemstones, fossils, and religious artifacts...mixed with metal. I love combining materials and techniques in non-traditional ways. I'm not formally trained in jewelry making and I believe that allows me the freedom to work without pre-conceived ideas about what I should and shouldn't be doing.
-----------------------------------------
Holly Dean
I have an ongoing fascination with the connection between the past and present, be it historical or fantastical. This remains the driving force behind my artistic expression. Classical and fantasy literature, abbey ruins shrouded in mist, wonderfully gnarled trees and skillfully decorated manuscript pages inspire my style which is often described as being "medieval" in mood.

Katherine Labbe AKA Miz Katie
Expressionistic, contemporary, mixed media portrait painter.
